What is the cause for have low blood platelets?

My mother is very sick and the doctors are saying she has low blood platelets and a B12 Deficency. She's had 3 blood transfusions and hasn't gotten any better. She is having trouble speaking and is very confused. Does anyone know if this is fatal or can it be treated? What is causing it?
